Miss Nellie L. Decker, a teacher in the Logan school, passed away at her home in Evanston, Friday night, March 15, after an illness of a week.
Miss Decker had been a member of the Wilmette public school teaching staff for twenty years. She began her work in the small frame building that was situated just north of the Logan school building, and was transferred to the present building on its erection. During most of this time she taught the second grade and over seven hundred children have passed under her tutelage and owe her debt of gratitude for excellent instruction in the fundamental subjects.
“Too much cannot be said in praise of Miss Decker’s work,” said J. R. Harper, superintendent of Wilmette Public schools. “She was conscientious to a very high degree and her one ambition in life was to see that the particular group of children entrusted to her care made the proper advancement. While her room was noted for its industry and application to duty, her keen sympathy and understanding of children made it a pleasant place for a child. Above all else she liked to take a child that found learning difficult and give him the aid and encouragement necessary to help him master his difficulties. Her great reward was the glow of satisfaction that came to the child over a difficult lesson well learned. The boys and girls who have sat under her administration, as well as their parents, will hold her in grateful memory.”
Public schools in Wilmette were closed Monday afternoon, March 18, in order that teachers might attend the funeral of Miss Decker, which was held at 2 o’clock at the Hebblethwaite funeral chapel, 1610 Maple avenue, Evanston. Burial took place at Wyoming, Ill.
Miss Decker is survived by two brothers, John B. Decker, of Chicago, and Ward D. Decker, of Denver.
