Charles L. Johnson, 60, of 1616 Highland avenue, Wilmette, was fatally injured at about 5:50 o’clock Tuesday evening when the car in which he was riding collided with another machine driven by John McLaren Simpson of Glencoe opposite the home of Paul C. L’Amoreaux on Sheridan road in Winnetka.
Mrs. Johnson, who accompanied her husband and was driving, was painfully hurt. Simpson, who is the son of James Simpson, president of Marshall Field and company, and a student at the University of Chicago, and his companion, Lawrence Callahan, 1325 Astor street, Chicago, escaped practically unscathed.
According to witnesses, the accident was unavoidable. Simpson was driving south on Sheridan road, at about thirty miles an hour while Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were proceeding in the opposite direction. At the L’Amoreaux home, located at 224 Sheridan road, Mrs. Johnson swerved her machine to enter the driveway, intending to stop at that address to visit relatives, it is understood. In so doing, however, she drove directly into the path of the Simpson machine.
Mr. Johnson was rushed to the North Shore Health Resort, situated nearby, but died within a few minutes of his arrival there. He was a retired Chicago police officer. Mrs. Johnson was taken to the Evanston hospital.
An inquest, called for 10 o’clock Wednesday morning at Scott’s funeral chapel in Winnetka, was postponed to October 31 at 1:30 o’clock, pending the recovery of Mrs. Johnson. Simpson was not held by the police.
