Peter Lorimer 60 years old, 979 Spruce street, Winnetka, was fatally injured last Saturday evening when an automobile in which he was riding struck the concrete abutment of the bridge over the north branch of the river on Lake avenue, at the Wilmette west limits. Edward Bell, 840 Center street, Winnetka, who was said to have been the driver of the car, was painfully cut and bruised, and was held by the Wilmette police.

According to the facts which were brought out at the inquest, held Tuesday morning at the William H. Scott undertaking establishment, 1124 Central avenue, Bell, an automobile mechanic, had been putting Lorimer’s car in running condition after a winter in storage. Lorimer had called at the garage and the two had left in the car to test it. They were seen driving east on Lake avenue shortly before the accident.

Wilmette police were notified of the accident shortly after it occurred, but when they arrived on the scene both men were gone. Lorimer had been taken to his home in Winnetka, where he died the following night, by Floyd Gyger, of Northbrook, who passed by shortly after the accident. Bell, it was learned later, had been taken to Wilmette by another motorist. There he was taken in charge by Patrolman William Kreul.

Kreul testified at the inquest that he went to an address on Lake avenue in response to a call that an injured man was there. He said that he found Bell sitting in a motor car in front of the house and that Bell was obviously under the influence of liquor. He took Bell to the station where the injured man was given first aid treatment by Dr. Moore and locked up for the night. Dr. Moore also testified that Bell was intoxicated.

Bell was unable to be present at the inquest because of his injuries, which included a badly bruised foot, and the inquest was continued until Friday, June 4. Patrolman Kreul testified that Bell admitted having been the driver of the car.
