Services held for Mrs. Mary Barry, resident 35 years

Mrs. Mary Burton Stewart Barry, 82 years old, and for the past 35 years a resident of Wilmette, passed away at her home, 912 Greenleaf avenue, last Monday. Mrs. Barry was the daughter of Thomas A. Stewart, first editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune and had been a resident of Chicago and the North Shore all of her life, having come to Illinois with her parents when less than a year old.
She was born in Laporte, Ind., where her father had been the editor of the Laporte Whig. In 1847 her parents moved to Chicago, residing on what was at that time the north side but is now in the heart of the city. Mrs. Barry received her education in the Northwestern Female seminary, an antecedent of Northwestern university. In 1867 she became the wife of George Barry, an officer in the Consumers company and who passed away in 1905. Mr. and Mrs. Barry were active in the founding of the Swedenborgen church on Van Buren street.
Mrs. Barry came to Wilmette in 1894 and throughout her residence here was prominent in club and social affairs. She was a member emeritus of the Wilmette Woman's club, a member of the Wilmette Circle and of the D. A. R.
Surviving are three children, Dr. George F. Barry of Evanston, Mrs. John A. MacLean of Wilmette, and Mrs. Eugene A. Hatch of New York, with ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday from the residence. Rev. Stephen A. Lloyd officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery.
