Burial services for Jedediah Haskins Smith, a former resident of Wilmette and a member until his death of the Wilmette Masonic lodge, were conducted Sunday morning, April 3, by Wilmette Lodge, No. 931, A. F. and A. M., at Rosehill cemetery, following services at his home in South Bend, Ind.

Mr. Smith passed away at the Epworth hospital in South Bend Thursday, March 31, after an illness of about ten days.

Mr. Smith was born January [16?], 1861 near New Troy, Mich., the son of Chauncey and Abigail Carroll Smith. He was a graduate of Michigan State college in 1883 and was for many years engaged in educational work, his latest affiliation being with the Eugene Field school in Rogers Park where he was principal until 1906, when he resigned to enter business with his brothers. In later years he achieved success in the trade journal field. In recent years Mr. and Mrs. Smith spent some time in travel which took them through the United States, Canada, Alaska, the West Indies, Panama, Europe, Egypt and Palestine. While in Palestine Mrs. Smith was taken fatally ill and died on March 4, 1923. Mr. Smith lived with his sister in Berkeley, Cal., until January 5, 1926, when he was married to Miss Florence Lee Willson Anderson and took up residence at South Bend.

He was a member of the Masonic fraternity for many years, and was affiliated with the Sons of the American Revolution and numerous political and social clubs in the vicinity of Chicago.
