- Full Text
One of the most tragic accidents ever recorded by Wilmette police occurred Sunday morning, April 13, when little 8 year old Virginia Pearson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray C. Pearson, 117 Dupee place, was struck and fatally injured at Ninth street and Linden avenue by a car driven by E. Herbert Lilly, 206 Ninth street.
With the street intersection crowded by cars parked in the vicinity of the St. Francis Xavier church, the little girl, crossing the street, stepped behind one of the parked machines and directly into the path of the Lilly car which was proceeding toward the corner. It was not definitely determined, according to the police whether wheel of the car passed over the child or whether she was thrown and injured by the impact. She died Sunday afternoon at the Evanston Hospital. The car behind which she passed was parked over the sidewalk line, it was stated.
While Mr. Lilly was detained for identification, the child was rushed to the hospital, where, a short time later, Mr. Lilly stated he was informed that she was not seriously injured. He was at the hospital, it was said, before the man who had conveyed the child had left. It was later that afternoon that he learned of the death of the little girl and gave himself up to the police.
The coroner’s jury later helped Mr. Lilly to the grand jury on a reported charge of involuntary manslaughter. He was released on bond.
Services for little Virginia were held on Tuesday at Elgin.
