Frank Fiegen, 89, a lifelong resident of Wilmette, died May 10 [2000] at the Hospice of the North Shore, Skokie. Mr. Fiegen was born in the village of Gross Point, which was centered around Ridge Road and later became part of Wilmette. He saw enormous changes take place in the Village during his lifetime. Mr. Fiegen was an active member of the Wilmette Historical Society and often assisted in identifying photos of local historical people and places. His family's excavating contractor business, J. Fiegen & Sons, which employed three generations, is included in the Historical Society's current exhibition on local businesses. Mr. Fiegen was active in St. Joseph Catholic Church of Wilmette for many years, belonging to the church choir, the Knights of Columbus and The Holy Name Society. He also served in Wilmette village government, first as trustee and later as president of the Plan Commission. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Gretta (nee Miller); two sons, John and Mark; three daughters, Linda, Diane (Ken) Boehm and Karen Bryant; a brother, Bob; two sisters, Clare and Anne (Schubert); eight grandchildren, Eric, Chris, Jonathan, David, Elizabeth, Adam, Andrew, Michael; and two great-granddaughters, Suzanne and Elena Grace. Mr. Fiegen is preceded in death by a brother Vic; a sister Trudy; and a daughter Sister Mary Marius (Margot). A funeral Mass was celebrated May 12 at St. Joseph Church and interment was in the St. Joseph Cemetery.
