State Rep. Joseph Lyons, D-9th, of Chicago is sponsoring House Bill 4582 and State Sen. James DeLeo, D-10th, also from Chicago, has reportedly agreed to submit an identical bill that would protect Illinois newspapers' rights to take photographs at state-level sporting events. Conflict has arisen since last year when the Illinois High School Association contracted with Visual Image Photography Inc. in Wisconsin for exclusive access to IHSA tournament for photo opportunities. From then on any newspaper that wanted a media pass to an IHSA event had to sign an agreement limiting their own access and agree not to sell photos not printed in the newspaper. Comments by Linda Yonke, Superintendent at New Trier High School District 203 and Randy Oberembt, New Trier Athletic Director. The Illinois Press Association sued and unsuccessfully sought a temporary restraining order against the IHSA rules, but now the discussion has moved to the General Assembly.
