- Barbara F. Schnabel, 69, formerly of Wilmette, died Dec. 6 at King's College Hospital in London from complications of gastric cancer.
Mrs. Schnabel was born Aug. 4 1938, in Louisville, Ky., to John Burks Fetter and Maury "Babe" Fetter.
She received a bachelor of science in speech form Northwestern University in 1960 and a master of arts in reading education from Northeastern University in 1984.
She spent time after college working for the major television networks after college, but was most proud of the difference she was able to make in the lives of her students during the 10 years she taught reading at Kilmer Elementary School in Chicago.
Mrs. Schnabel lived for 30 years in Wilmette. After retiring from teaching in 2005, she moved to Sacramento, Calif., where she became very involved with helping the local Unitarian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon (Felipe Flores) Schnabel; and a son, Gregory Schnabel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack.
A service was held Dec. 30 at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Sacramento.
