Notes:
[article written by James D.W. Kline, 531 Eighth St., Wilmette] When the Chicago and Northwesten railway was put through to Waukegan in 1854, the line ran midway between the settlement along the lake shore and the early Gross Point village about two miles west. The low land eastward to the new railroad, without drainage and at times, being under water, was impassable. From the lake shore westward to the railroad was dense forest. Article includes information on early developers and issues posed by geography.
