Kay Callahan died peacefully on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Mather Pavilion in Evanston, IL and the kindness and assistance that was provided by the staff at that facility will forever be remembered. Kay Callahan was born in New York City on August 26, 1916 the first child of her parents, Catherine Theresa Walsh and Patrick Joseph Kenneally, and grew up in Manhattan with her brother Joseph, and two sisters, Mary and Margaret. Prior to moving to Chicago in 1950, she was surrounded by an extended family throughout the New York region. Kay Callahan attended Holy Name School, Blessed Sacrament High School, and the Grace Institute in New York City. At the time of her marriage in 1940 she was the secretary to Daniel Reeves of the Daniel Reeves Company in New York. Throughout her life she shared her many talents by helping friends and their families in numerous ways and by active participation in many service organizations such as, Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church and School, Meals on Wheels, Wilmette Historical Society, Howard Area Community Center, Wilmette Housing Commission, Women's Catholic Club, North Shore Senior Center, and the Village of Wilmette. Among the recognitions of her many contributions, she was named the Senior of the Year in Wilmette for 1992. Kay Callahan is survived by her husband, Patrick J. Callahan; her sister, Mary (the late Bernard) Sweeney of Monmouth Beach, NJ; her daughters, Mary (Michael) Harrison of Hot Springs, AR, Catherine (Darlene Bieling) Callahan of Scottsdale, AZ, and Eileen Callahan of Sausalito, CA; her sons, John (Gayle) Callahan of Northfield, IL, Patrick (Patricia) Callahan, Jr. of Winnetka, IL, Daniel Callahan of Wilmette, IL, Timothy (Denise) Callahan of Richmond, VA, Thomas (Heather) Callahan of Wilmette, and Steven (Susan) Callahan of Lake Zurich, IL; her granddaughters, Mary (Philip) Erdoes of New York, NY, Shannon (Kevin) Coyman of Orlando, FL, Erin and Ann Marie Callahan of Richmond, VA, Kristen Harrison of Hot Springs, AR, and Lisa Callahan of Lake Zurich; her grandsons, Patrick (Jennise) Callahan of Newport Beach, CA, Michael (Brittan) Callahan of Winnetka, Christopher (Shields) Callahan of Chicago, Daniel (Erika) Callahan of Chicago, Jack Callahan of Wilmette, Michael Callahan of Houston, TX, Sean and James Callahan of Richmond, VA, Stephen (Meritt) Harrison of Hot Springs, AR, Kevin Harrison of Bentonville, AR, Thomas and Connor Callahan of Wilmette, and Kevin and Ryan Callahan of Lake Zurich; her great-granddaughters, Mia, Morgan and Mason Erdoes of New York, NY, Coco and Poppy Callahan of Winnetka; her great-grandson Kieran Callahan of Houston, TX; and her many nieces and nephews. She has joined in death her sister, Margaret Kenneally, her brother Joseph (the late Kathleen) Kenneally, and her granddaughter Mackenzie Callahan. A Mass in Celebration of Life will be offered at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 524 Ninth Street, Wilmette, IL (847-256-4250) at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2010, with Visitation at the Church from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Burial services will be private.
