Funeral services were held for John C. Carpenter on Monday afternoon at his late residence, 239 Essex road, Kenilworth. Mr. Carpenter, one of the most widely known patent attorneys in the country, died last Friday at a hospital in Marion, Ohio, where he was taken when his car overturned in a ditch near Delaware, Ohio, on Sunday, June 4. He was en-route to his country home in the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia when he met with the accident. It was thought at first that his injuries were not serious, but later a heart injury was discovered and this resulted in his death. Mr. Carpenter, son of Frank G. Carpenter, author and world traveler, was born at Washington D. C., on December 7, 1884. He was educated at Cornell university, where he was prominent in athletics. After his graduation from Cornell he was sent to London as a member of the United States Olympic team in 1908.

Prominent Attorney
Later Mr. Carpenter studied law at the University of Chicago and a t George Washington university. He began his practice of law in Chicago in 1911, when he was associated with the firm of Linthicum, Belt and Fuller, patent attorneys. He later was a member of the firm of Munday, Clarke and Carpenter, but for the past ten years had practiced independently. Among his clients were such large corporations as the American Can company, the Felt and Tarrant Manufacturing company and the Staley Corn Products company.

Kenilworth Civic Leader
In Kenilworth Mr. Carpenter was active in community affairs. His club affiliations included memberships in the University club of Chicago, the Skokie Country club, the Cosmos club of Washington D. C., and the University Club of New York. Mr. Carpenter is survived by his widow, Mrs. Laura Elliott Carpenter, four children, Sue, Frank, William and Robert, and a sister, Mrs. W. Chapin Huntington of Washington, D.C.
